 Dr. Kenneth P. Ruscio, President (Undergraduate Commencement)

Ken Ruscio was elected the 26th president of Washington and Lee University on March 7, 2006. A W&L alumnus and distinguished scholar in the study of democratic theory and public policy, Dr. Ruscio served as the Dean of the Jepson School of Leadership Studies at University of Richmond for four years before assuming his present position.

Prior to his tenure at the University of Richmond, he held various positions at W&L including Professor of Politics, Associate Dean of The Williams School of Commerce, Economics and Politics, and Dean of Freshmen. He was a postdoctoral research scholar at the University of California, Los Angeles from 1983 to 1985, and taught at both Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Kansas University.

Ruscio earned his B.A. in politics from Washington and Lee University in 1976 and earned an Master of Public Administration and Ph.D. from Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs in 1978 and 1983, respectively.

Ruscio has authored numerous articles and essays and the book, The Leadership Dilemma in Modern Democracy (Edward Elgar Publishing Inc., 2004). He recently completed his second term as national president of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership society begun at W&L in 1914 that now has chapters at over 300 campuses. He has led, and served on, dozens of academic, professional, and civic committees.

Ruscio is married to the former Kimberley O'Donnell of New York. They have a son, Matthew.
 

 

 William H. Webster, Distinguished American Lawyer, Jurist, and  Public Servant (Law Commencement)

William Webster retired as partner in Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP at the end of 2005, but he remains active in the practice of law. A former chairman of the firm's Litigation Department, he was also involved in the Firm's international corporate, banking, and administrative law practices. He now serves as arbitrator and mediator in a wide variety of disputes between corporate parties and continues to be involved in prominent public sector activities.

Prior to joining Milbank in 1991, Judge Webster was, since 1987, Director of Central Intelligence, where he headed all the foreign intelligence agencies of the United States and directed the Central Intelligence Agency. Earlier, he served as Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (1978-1987), Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit (1973-1978), and Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri (1970-1973). A practicing attorney with a St. Louis law firm from 1949 to 1959, Judge Webster served as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri from 1960 to 1961. He returned to private practice in 1961. From 1964 to 1969, he was also a member of the Missouri Board of Law Examiners.

Judge Webster graduated from Amherst College and received his Juris Doctor from Washington University Law School. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Council of the American Law Institute, Order of the Coif and is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation. He has received numerous honorary degrees and awards, including the Freedoms Foundation National Service Medal (1985), the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1991), and the National Security Medal (1991). He is a past Chairman of the American Bar Association Business Law Section and past President of the Institute of Judicial Administration. He is a director of the American Arbitration Association and the CPR Center for Dispute Resolution. He is a Trustee of Washington University in St. Louis.

He is the recipient of the 2001 Justice Award of the American Judicature Society and the 2002 ABA Medal, its highest honor. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America and has also received NASA’s Distinguished Public Service Medal. As noted thereon "For your exceptional, dedicated and untiring public service in support of the families of the crew of Space Shuttle Columbia STS-107."

Judge Webster was named in 2006 as the Chair of the Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC). He previously served as the HSAC Vice Chair.
 

 Rev. John Edward Miller '70, Rector, St. Mary's Episcopal Church (Undergraduate Baccalaureate)

A Richmond native and an Eagle Scout, the Rev. Dr. John Miller graduated from Washington and Lee in 1970 as an honor-roll double major in history and economics. He played lacrosse, wrote for the Ring-tum Phi, and served as president of Phi Kappa Sigma. He holds three degrees from the Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va.: master of divinity (1974), master of theology (1977), and doctor of philosophy (1982).

Miller began his career in 1975 at River Road Church, Baptist, in Richmond as an associate minister to youth and college students. He was ordained deacon at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Richmond in 1981 and priest in 1982, and elected rector of the church in 1984. He taught for 18 years at the University of Richmond, with courses ranging from introduction to religious studies and Old and New Testament, to the Reformation and the contemporary church. He has also taught systematic theology at Virginia Union University and is the coauthor of a curriculum in theology for the University of the South’s Education for Ministry program.

He has been active in both ecclesiastical and community service organizations, including as a trustee of the Diocesan Missionary Society, a member of the Board of Governors of St. Christopher’s School, a director of the Goochland Fellowship and Family Service, a member of the advisory boards of Richmond Memorial Hospital and St. John’s Hospital, and a member of the board of trustees of Westminster-Canterbury, Elk Hill Farm, the Free Clinic of Goochland, and St. Mary’s Episcopal School.

Miller is married to Lisa Fisher Johnson. Their family includes Lisa’s two children, Rachel and Camm Johnson, and John’s son and daughter-in-law, John and Ellen Miller.

Miller enjoys reading, bicycling, travel, classical and rock music, and cooking. He continues to be an avid lacrosse fan, and has served as a volunteer coach of Geronimo Lacrosse, a program in Richmond.
 

 Jordan Campbell '08 (Undergraduate Commencement)

Jordan Campbell is a senior philosophy major from Dallas, Texas, and current vice president of the Student Executive Committee. During his time at W&L, Jordan has served as junior class representative to the Executive Committee, a Student-Athlete Mentor (SAM), and a member of the Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) leadership team. He is a four-year letter winner on the varsity football team and was a member of the ODAC Championship team in 2006.

When he isn't setting team records in the weight room, Jordan enjoys participating in the W&L Repertory Dance Company as one of the first males ever to take ballet at the university. He is also a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.

Following graduation from W&L, Jordan hopes to go abroad and either teach or work in the area of micro-finance.

 


 

COL Harold H. Worrell Jr., Professor of Military Science, VMI (Undergraduate ROTC Commissioning)

COL Worrell is a 1981 graduate of the Virginia Military Institute. His assignment until Fall 2006 was as assistant deputy chief of staff for plans with the Third U.S. Army at Fort McPherson, Georgia, with major responsibilities for the war planning in the Persian Gulf region and the war on terrorism. Previously he served as commander of a field artillery battalion in the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and as the division’s inspector general. Worrell has served in a variety of staff and command positions, including as aide-de-camp to the deputy commanding general of the U.S. Army’s V Corps in Frankfurt, Germany.

Worrell is married to the former Kimlee A. Saul.
